The Authority or Accredited Test Laboratories (ATL) performs the Type Approval of television White Space devices (WSDs) in accordance with the relevant Regulations. The Authority issues Type Approval Certificate to applicants if their WSDs meet the Type Approval requirements. This process of WSD type approval is subdivided into two main parts:
The Authority or an ATL assesses the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and radio emission performance of specific models of WSD to ascertain if they comply with the Regulations. The WSD is required to operate within designated radio frequency band without causing harmful interference to the incumbent users of the band as well as to other primary services outside of the band.
The Authority or ATL assesses specific models of WSD to ascertain if they can correctly communicate with GLSD(s) in compliance with the Regulations. The interactions between WSDs and GLSD are through protocols such as the Protocol to Access White-space Databases (PAWS), RFC 7545, with support for particular Regulations a.k.a. Ruleset.
